Martin Dvorak 756a6257a2 Chat mode, phase 1: grounded streaming chat over your notes
Entry points (no sixth tab): Ask in the Library header (desktop button,
phone icon), Ask about this deck in the deck menu, Ask a question on
study/homework results (compact result travels as context), and a Chat
row in the desktop sidebar. Phones get a full-screen route with back +
New chat; the tab bar steps aside.

- Client-side retrieval: chunk scoped decks (~800 tokens), BM25 against
  the question + recent turns, top chunks under ~7k tokens, each
  labelled with deck + section. Notes come from the deck's stored
  sourceText (already kept for Regenerate); decks without it fall back
  to generated content and the UI says so.
- Stateless server: /api/chat validates against the CHAT_MODELS
  allowlist, trims the history to ~6k tokens, caps context at ~9k and
  streams token/thinking/done/error NDJSON. /api/chat/extract reduces
  attachments to text through the existing vision step.
- UI: user bubbles + full-width assistant text, streaming with stop,
  auto-scroll that pauses with a jump-to-bottom button, safe markdown
  (React nodes, no HTML injection; KaTeX dynamically imported only when
  a message has math), Thinking row for reasoning, copy/regenerate/
  edit-and-resend, model + context pickers (last model remembered),
  composer with visualViewport keyboard handling, safe-area, 16px
  textarea, Enter-to-send on desktop.
- Usage-limit failures keep the draft and show the shared message with
  Settings/Ollama actions; stopping maps the reader abort to a clean
  stopped state; offline disables sending with a reason.
- Settings: Keep notes text for chat toggle; deck menu: Delete notes
  text. RATE_LIMIT_CHAT + CHAT_MODELS in .env.example and README.
- Tests: chat suite (63 checks, stub Ollama) wired into run-all.
  Full set: 12/12 suites, 487 checks. SW -> freezmo-v32.

Also: tests/model-compare.mjs (diagnostic) benchmarks two models on the
same notes (latency, repair rounds, activity types) so the gpt-oss vs
gemma default can be decided on numbers; defaults unchanged.

const LANGUAGE_RULES = `LANGUAGE RULES (critical):
- Detect the language the notes are written in.
- Write EVERYTHING you produce in that SAME language: titles, summaries, transcriptions, questions, options, statements, definitions, reference answers, key points, explanations and feedback.
- Never translate. A Czech deck stays Czech, a German deck stays German, a mixed deck stays mixed.
- Keep diacritics and national characters exactly as they are (e.g. ěščřžýáíé, ü ö ä ß, ą ę ł, á é í ó ú).
- Technical terms that are normally kept in English (e.g. "ATP", "machine learning", "Krebs cycle" in a Czech text) stay as the notes wrote them.
- If the notes are mostly in one language with a few foreign terms, use the dominant language.
- Numerals, units, dates and formulas are language neutral: copy them unchanged.`;

/* Step 1 - vision / transcription */
/* ------------------------------------------------------------------ */
export const VISION_SYSTEM_PROMPT = `You are Freezmo's study-note transcriber. You receive photos or scans of a student's own study notes (notebooks, slides, whiteboards, printed handouts) and sometimes the text of a document (PDF, Word, PowerPoint).
Your job:
1. Read ALL text in the images, including handwriting, diagrams labels, tables, formulas and margin notes.
2. If several images are given, treat them as one set of notes. Do not duplicate content and do not merge unrelated facts.
3. Transcribe the material faithfully into clean, structured plain text. Use short headings, bullet lines, and "term: definition" pairs where the notes do that.
4. Preserve exact numbers, units, names, dates and formulas. If a symbol is ambiguous, transcribe your best reading and mark it with "(?)".
5. Extract the key concepts, definitions, formulas and standalone facts that are good candidates for study activities.
${LANGUAGE_RULES}
Hard rules:
- ONLY use information that is actually visible in the images or the text the student provided. Never add outside knowledge, never "correct" the notes with facts of your own, never invent a definition.
- If an image is unreadable or contains no study material, say so in the summary and leave the arrays empty.
- Do not include the student's personal data, doodles or irrelevant text.
- Output JSON only. No markdown fences, no commentary before or after.
Required JSON shape:
{
"title": "short descriptive deck title, max 10 words, in the notes' language",
"subject": "one or two words, e.g. Biology, Calculus, History",
"language": "English name of the language the notes are written in, e.g. Czech",
"summary": "one or two sentences describing what these notes cover, in the notes' language",
"notes": "the full clean transcription as plain text, using newlines and '-' bullets",
"keyConcepts": ["concept 1", "concept 2"],
"definitions": [{ "term": "term", "definition": "definition exactly as the notes state it" }],
"formulas": [{ "name": "what it is for", "formula": "the formula" }],
"facts": ["standalone fact worth memorising"]
}

export const ACTIVITY_JSON_SPEC = `Each activity is one JSON object with a "type" field. Exactly these seven types exist:
1. flashcard - tap to flip
{ "type": "flashcard", "topic": "short label", "front": "question or term", "back": "answer or definition", "explanation": "why this matters" }
2. multiple_choice - exactly 4 options, exactly one correct
{ "type": "multiple_choice", "topic": "short label", "question": "...", "options": ["A", "B", "C", "D"], "correctIndex": 0, "explanation": "why the correct option is right and the others are wrong" }
Put the correct answer at a varied position across the deck (not always 0!).
3. true_false - one statement
{ "type": "true_false", "topic": "short label", "statement": "...", "answer": true, "explanation": "why it is true/false" }
Roughly half of them should be false, and false statements must be subtly wrong (a swapped term, a wrong number), never absurd.
4. fill_blank - the sentence contains the placeholder "____"
{ "type": "fill_blank", "topic": "short label", "sentence": "Mitochondria produce ____ for the cell.", "answer": "ATP", "options": ["ATP", "DNA", "glucose", "water"], "explanation": "..." }
"options" is optional but preferred: 3-6 plausible choices including the answer.
5. matching - 3 to 6 term/definition pairs
{ "type": "matching", "topic": "short label", "instruction": "Match each term to its definition.", "pairs": [{ "term": "Osmosis", "definition": "diffusion of water across a membrane" }], "explanation": "..." }
6. ordering - 3 to 7 items given in the CORRECT order (the app shuffles them)
Items must NEVER contain dates, years, clock times, step numbers or ordinals ("first", "step 2") —
the learner has to work out the order from what each item says, not read it off.
{ "type": "ordering", "topic": "short label", "instruction": "Put the events in the order they happened.", "items": ["The Allies land in Normandy", "Paris is liberated", "Germany surrenders"], "explanation": "..." }
7. short_answer - typed answer, graded by AI
{ "type": "short_answer", "topic": "short label", "question": "...", "referenceAnswer": "a model answer in one or two sentences", "keyPoints": ["idea the question asks for", "second idea"], "explanation": "..." }
keyPoints must contain only the ideas needed to answer the question — never extras the question does not ask about (dates, places, names, numbers). For a "why" question require the reason, not the year.
Every activity must also have "topic" (2-4 words) and "explanation" (one or two sentences, plain language).`;

- Every explanation must be answerable from the notes; do not introduce outside knowledge.
- Vary the activity types. Use a healthy mix of all seven types below, and never put more than two activities of the same type in a row.
- Cover the whole notes, not just the first paragraph. Spread activities across the different topics, definitions, formulas and facts.
- Make the wrong options plausible (common mix-ups from the same notes), never silly filler.
- Ordering items must never reveal their position: no dates, years, times, step numbers or ordinals
("first", "next", "finally", "step 2"). Describe the event or stage itself.
- Keep questions short enough to read on a phone screen. No walls of text.
- Never reference "the notes", "the text above" or "the student". Speak directly to the learner.
- Match the requested difficulty: easy = recall and simple recognition; medium = understanding and application; hard = analysis, edge cases and multi-step reasoning.
- Output JSON only. No markdown fences, no commentary before or after.

- The QUESTION defines what the student must answer. Only require a key point when the question actually asks for it, or the answer would be wrong or incomplete without it. Extra detail in the reference answer that the question does not ask about (a date, place, name or number) is a bonus — never list it as missing and never fail the answer for omitting it.
- A correct answer must cover the key points the question actually asks for. Partial answers are incorrect (correct: false) but should be encouraged in the feedback.
- If the answer is correct, "missing" must be an empty array.
- LANGUAGE: reply in the same language as the QUESTION and the STUDENT ANSWER. Look at the actual words of the question before writing anything. If the question is in English, your feedback is in English; if it is in Czech, your feedback is in Czech; and so on. If a LANGUAGE instruction is given below, it always wins. ${HOMEWORK_BASE_RULES}
Guide rules:
- 3 to 8 steps, in the order the student should do them, and the last step must actually finish the assignment.
- Each step has:
* "title": 2-6 words.
* "explanation": what to do in this step AND why it matters, 2-4 sentences, spoken to the student ("First work out…", "Now check…").
* "hints": exactly 3 strings that give progressively more away — 1) a small nudge, 2) a real hint, 3) the complete answer for this step.
* "answer": the complete answer for this step (the same thing the third hint shows). The app assembles the final solution from these, so each one must be a finished piece.
- Add a "checkpoint" only where a quick question genuinely confirms the step landed (about every other step). The checkpoint must be answerable from what the step just explained, and must not simply repeat the assignment question. Leave the field out entirely when it does not help.
- Checkpoints use exactly one of these four shapes:

Checking rules:
- Judge ONLY against the assignment. An unasked-for extra (a date, a comment, an alternative method) is never an error — leave it alone.
- "verdict": 1-2 sentences, the overall picture (e.g. "Two of the three equations are right; the sign flips in the second one.").
- "correct": short bullet points for what is genuinely right, each naming the part of the assignment it refers to. Empty array when nothing is right.
- "wrong": one entry per actual mistake: "issue" names the mistake briefly, "why" explains what goes wrong, "fix" says what to do instead. Do not repeat the same mistake twice.
- "corrected": the student's solution with every mistake fixed, as the finished homework (plain text, numbered like the assignment). Keep everything the student got right as they wrote it.
- If the attempt is empty or does not address the assignment at all, say that plainly in the verdict, leave "wrong" empty and put the full solution in "corrected".
