"Terribly high CPU usage, the MacBook gets really hot" - a fanless MacBook
Air on a 144Hz screen. Measured on that machine with headed engines
(process CPU plus the per-process GPU time macOS keeps): an idle Aero
library cost LibreWolf ~110% CPU and ~230ms/s of GPU, the study feed ~130%,
Chromium up to ~57% CPU and ~350ms/s of GPU, Safari ~220-250ms/s of
WindowServer GPU. Priced one by one:
- the gradient mask on .ice-floats re-rendered the animated layer offscreen
on every frame (~75 points of Gecko CPU). The floats now rise through a
plain rectangular band clear of the header, the bottom chrome and the
rail, and fade in and out inside it, so the clip never cuts a visible one;
- the overlay grain forced a backdrop readback per frame for a texture that
measured a mean <=0.11/255 difference: removed;
- the invisible blob drift made every frame a full-screen redraw: the blobs
are painted once;
- static glass (answer tiles, feedback panel, chips, inputs, dropzones,
lists, segmented controls, Aero hint chips) re-blurred the moving scene
every frame: only floating glass blurs now, and Aero's baked chat chrome
drops a live blur that never showed under the bake;
- the scene also parks while the window has no focus and under any dialog
or sheet scrim (.scene-pause); the loading icon is a compositor-run CSS
animation instead of a framer-motion main-thread loop.
After, focused and animating: LibreWolf library 109% -> 33% CPU, study
134% -> 34%, chat 130% -> 42%; Chromium GPU 2.5-4.4x lower with 7-22 points
less CPU; Safari's WindowServer GPU -20-26% in Aero, about half in dark.
Unfocused or under a sheet: nothing. bubbles-test sweeps every float through
41 phases against the band and pins the parking and the cost contract;
tests/heat-probe.mjs (macOS) repeats the measurement; the suites find
Playwright's Chromium on macOS.
All 15 suites pass, lint clean, the contrast scan lost a finding. Version
0.6.7, SW v89.

From your notes: the generator now stores a verbatim source quote with every
activity (schema + prompt + a server-side clamp so a chatty model cannot drop a
card), and the feedback panel shows the sentence that carries it with the quote
highlighted green. Decks made before the change, and quotes the model trimmed,
fall back to a local IDF-weighted match over the saved notes text
(lib/notes-source.ts): nothing is shown unless at least two distinct terms
land. The passage hides in exam mode with the other reveals.
Read aloud: a Web Speech API speaker control on the text a learner reads
(flashcard faces, questions, statements, sentences, instructions) via
lib/speech.ts and components/SpeakButton.tsx — one utterance app-wide, a voice
matched to the deck's language, and no button at all where the browser has no
speech synthesis. It used to sit inside the flashcard's flip button (nested
buttons, tapping it flipped the card); it now lives next to the hint row.
Timed runs: the feed chrome carries a timer chip (off by default) that gives
each card 30 seconds; a card that runs out is recorded as a miss through the
same path as a wrong answer (history + SRS agree), shows a toast, and the feed
moves straight on with a fresh budget. handleAnswered ignores a second result
per card, so a timeout plus a manual answer cannot record twice.
The generator's type spec now names what each type suits (language decks lean
on flashcards/matching/fill blank, ordering needs a real sequence, short answer
reasoning), so the deck-aware guidance covers all seven types.
New activities-test suite (24 checks: quote path, local path, the green mark,
the speech stub, the timed run on Playwright's fake clock), registered in
run-all; phase2 pins that the notes passage stays hidden in exam mode; en+cs
keys for every new string; no new dependencies. Version 0.6.1, SW v83.
Buttons: the recipe's thin veils let btn-secondary/btn-ghost/glass-pill
blend into the grass and sky - they now carry a stronger pale-glass veil
(the Ask-pill look) over the blurred scene, ghosts plus a rim and
full-contrast text. Homework make/check results gained the same red "!"
report control as the feeds and the guide (a synthetic short-answer
activity maps into the report flow; pinned in phase3).
Reduced motion: the manual toggle only fed framer's MotionConfig, which
strips transform animations - while components branched on the OS-only
useReducedMotion - so translucent sheets still spring-faded their opacity
in over the page (the "ugly visual glitch with the settings panel"). All
16 components now read useAppReducedMotion() (OS or toggle), and the
settings sheet/scrim and the library's phone sheet go instant. Verified
frame by frame: opacity 1.00 from the first frame.
Contrast 0 findings, axe clean; mobile 126/126, chat 102/102, providers
20/20, wizard 95/95, phase3 31/31, bubbles 34/34, i18n 13/13, native
33/33. Version 0.5.4, SW -> freezmo-v76.
The wallpaper is the one from the mockup: "The S Aesthetic That You
Definitely Recognize Frutiger Aero" via WallpaperSafari
(https://wallpapersafari.com/w/IlWuz7) — the URL in the request pointed at a
different (teal abstract) wallpaper, this is the grass/sky/water one that
matches the screenshot. Re-encoded to a 237 kB WebP in public/aero/, used as
the scene in aero only (light/dark never download it), and credited in
Settings next to the theme picker.
The drawn CSS scene (rays, reeds, skyline, caustics) is off over the photo;
the ten rising bubbles stay, and the orbs became extra bubbles. Buttons and
segments are liquid glass now — translucent, glossed top half, bright rim,
backdrop blur — instead of the solid aqua fill. Helper lines that sit
straight on the wallpaper (the keyboard tip, the AI note) get a small glass
chip: dark text on grass measured 2.5:1.
Also carries: the underwater scene + bubbles work, the floating cookie
notice, the Czech title (Tvůj mrazák) and the review-suite fix that made the
last deploy fail its gate.
Contrast: 0 below-minimum findings, 0 axe violations across all three
themes. Version 0.2.2, SW -> freezmo-v56.
The MacBook ran hot browsing the app: the ice scene animates constantly, so
every backdrop-filter surface re-ran its blur on every frame. Measured on
desktop (2x CPU throttle, software renderer): p50 frame 66.6ms baseline,
33.3ms with the static surfaces not filtering, 16.7ms with the scene's
animation also off; frames over 34ms: 128 -> 14.
The glass recipe is split: floating layers (sheets, dropdowns, dialogs, the
sticky header/chrome/tab bar) keep the blur (backdrop-blur-lg, what phones
already used); static layers (cards, the sidebar rail, the gate, the study
prompt card) keep the identical tint, rim, highlight and shadow without the
filter. The study prompt card moves from glass-panel to card + glass-solid,
which is the same surface recipe.
Quality: a deterministic pixel diff (scene motion frozen, both themes,
desktop + phone) shows a ~1% colour shift in the card backdrops — invisible.
The mobile axe contrast audit and the bubbles suite stay green.
tests/bubble-perf.mjs now also reports the glass cost. README: decision 61.
SW -> freezmo-v49.
On a GPU-composited desktop the flipped card showed the question mirrored
over the answer. Both faces are glass layers with backdrop-filter, and on
some compositing paths the front's backface keeps rendering, so the
pre-rotated back face and the mirrored front face both painted.
- The faces are now painted by an explicit visibility swap driven by the
animation's own rotation (onUpdate): the swap lands at the 90° edge-on
moment, where it cannot be seen, so exactly one face is ever in the
render tree — independent of backface-visibility and of the browser's
3D flattening rules. onAnimationComplete lands the swap for instant
flips (reduced motion now skips the spring, matching the app's motion
rules).
- PromptCard takes an optional style so the face can carry the visibility.
- phase-2 suite: the painted-face invariant at rest, flipped and flipped
back, plus the answer reading inside the card (56 checks).
- README: decision 53. SW -> freezmo-v39.
Answer history and schedules
- Every answer is recorded (deck, activity, topic, correct/wrong, time)
in a versioned IndexedDB log (freezmo-learning v1, stores answers +
srs), mirrored in memory for synchronous React reads and capped at
20k answers (oldest pruned). StudyFeed records as it grades.
- Light SM-2 schedule per activity: 1 day, 3 days, then interval x
ease; wrong answers return in ten minutes with the ease nudged down.
Review, mistakes, stats
- Library 'Smart review' card: due count, mistakes count (latest
answer wrong — clears itself when answered correctly), today's goal
progress. Review sessions freeze their item list at start.
- New /review (due across decks, ?mistakes=1 global or ?deck= per
deck) built on a shared SessionFeed with the study feed's snap/keyboard
mechanics, wake lock and a results slide.
- New /stats: day streak, five-week calendar, accuracy per subject and
per deck, weakest topics (>=3 answers), daily-goal progress.
- Daily goal configurable in Settings (10/20/30/50).
Exam mode
- New /exam: pick decks, question count, optional timer; no hints
(a NoHints context hides hint rows and the self-check escape);
results with score, per-deck and per-topic breakdown; wrong answers
land in the mistakes set through the normal history.
Reminders (conditional)
- VAPID-gated: GET/POST/DELETE /api/push and POST /api/push/test with
the standard route pattern, RATE_LIMIT_PUSH, zod, auth before body.
Subscriptions stored server-side as endpoint + keys only (PUSH_DIR).
UI hidden entirely without keys; iOS install note; service worker
push/notificationclick handlers; scripts/send-reminders.mjs for a
cron/systemd timer; web-push added as the one server dependency.
Verified: new phase-2 suite 42/42 (history/SRS shapes from a real study
run, mistakes clearing, review session, stats math, exam timer and
breakdowns, VAPID-less hidden state plus the configured
subscribe/validate/test/delete path against a second instance) plus
regression 74/74, mobile 52/52, wizard 80/80, declutter 116/116,
animation 8/8, native 35/35, phase1 38/38, i18n 25/25. Key parity
709/709. Lint + build clean. SW freezmo-v26.
Mobile only (<=639px / coarse pointers); desktop keeps its behaviour.
Foundation
- lib/motion.ts owns the spring presets (snappy/gentle/sheet), durations,
easings and variants (screens, tabs, wizard steps, list stagger).
- Native-feel CSS: press feedback scales every button, card, chip, tab,
row and summary to 0.96 with a spring-like cubic-bezier on transform
(scoped to phones/coarse pointers), tap-highlight off, touch-action
manipulation, chrome text non-selectable, reduced motion drops it.
- App shell fades in once on launch; the study feed fades in on phones.
Applied
- Tab bar: sliding active pill (shared layoutId) + icon bounce.
- Study Decks/Homework, language toggle, difficulty and size pickers:
the same gliding highlight, gated so desktop keeps the old styling.
- Route content enters direction-aware (deeper = from the right, back =
from the left, same-depth = crossfade) via RouteTransition on the
library/create/homework content columns; library tab switches
crossfade; wizard steps slide forward/backward (reduced motion safe).
- Library: cards fade up in a capped stagger on first load, glide with
layout animations and shrink away on delete (AnimatePresence).
- Study feed: correct feedback pulses, wrong shakes, the progress bar
settles with a spring curve, score and XP count up on the results.
- Settings sheet uses the sheet spring; the drawer now follows the
finger and closes on release velocity, like the sheet.
- Generation progress: the stage message fades/slides between stages;
the icon keeps its gentle wobble; the feed fades in on hand-off.
Skipped, on purpose: LazyMotion (the sliding highlights need layout
animations = domMax, same features the current import already has);
route exit animations (the App Router unmounts the outgoing page —
exits are handled by in-page AnimatePresence); replacing the study
feed's native scroll-snap with finger-follow drag (would fight the
platform scroller); finger-follow height animation for native <details>
expanders.
Verified: animation suite 8/8 (reduced motion + 4x-CPU-throttled trace:
no long tasks, CLS 0.0000), regression 74/74, mobile 52/52, declutter
116/116, i18n 25/25. Lint + build clean. SW freezmo-v21.
Homework (/homework — entry points in the drawer and on the create screen)
- Assignment intake reuses the study pipeline: pasted text, photos
(camera/picker, compressed in the browser) and documents (PDF/DOCX/PPTX/
ODT/text) through lib/image + lib/documents, the same vision step and the
same language guard. Raw files never leave the device — only text and JPEG
data URLs reach the server.
- Two large choice cards: “Just make it” returns the finished homework
(answer only, plain text, copy + make it again); “Explain how to make this
homework” builds an interactive guide.
- The guide is one step per screen in the study-feed snap layout:
explanation, three progressive hints (nudge -> hint -> the answer) and an
optional checkpoint rendered by the existing activity components (graded
through /api/grade). The last screen assembles the solution from the step
answers, with a copy button. Checkpoints carry xp 0 so the guide stays free
of XP/streak chrome.
- Results live in freezmo.homework.v1 with a small history (open/delete);
“Make it again” re-runs from the stored assignment text (the vision
transcription when photos were used) — no original files are stored.
- The answer and the guide are written in the assignment's language, never
translated into the UI language.
Server
- POST /api/homework: NDJSON stage events like /api/generate, the same
http-guard, auth checked before parsing, and its own RATE_LIMIT_HOMEWORK
(documented in .env.example + the README table).
- New prompts in lib/prompts.ts and zod schemas in lib/schemas.ts with the
same single repair retry; TEXT_MODEL for content, VISION_MODEL only for
photos. New shared client pieces: useNotesIntake, lib/homework store,
lib/clipboard, and a shared NDJSON reader in lib/client-api.
Also finishing the mobile polish pass from the previous request
- Phone ice scene: the top-left orb moved behind the glass header (it sat
behind the page heading/subtitle). The settings sheet's scroll cue is now a
bare chevron inside a content fade (mask) instead of a chip over the status
banner, and the API key card's note/disclosure/actions are tightened.
- theme-color now follows the in-app theme (SSR metas still fall back to the
OS preference); apple-mobile-web-app-status-bar-style stays “default”
because iOS fixes the status-bar text colour at launch.
Verified: 78/78 homework checks (text/photo/PDF, both modes, EN+CS, dark+light,
360/390px, copy, history persistence, storage privacy, API language, axe), plus
the existing suites re-run (mobile 47/47, pixel contrast 0 below AA, i18n 27/27,
desktop regression 72/72). Lint + build clean; service worker freezmo-v6.
English stays the default; Czech is a full translation. Only the app chrome
is translated - notes and generated decks keep their own language, which is a
core feature, not a setting.
i18n
- lib/i18n-dict.ts: flat en/cs dictionaries (441 keys each), translate() and
translatePlural() with real Czech plural rules (1 sada / 2-4 sady / 5+ sad).
English is the default and the fallback for a missing key.
- lib/i18n.ts: browser store (freezmo.locale.v1), useI18n() hook, and the
x-freezmo-locale header. The hook's t/plural are bound to the locale React
is rendering with, so the first client render matches the server HTML and
then re-renders in the stored language; module-level t is only for event
handlers and non-React helpers.
- <html lang> follows the choice (inline script + setLocale).
UI
- Settings -> Language segmented control (English / Cestina), plus an EN/CS
button on the key gate for first run.
- Every screen translated: sidebar, header, tab bar, library, deck cards,
folder bar, create flow, all seven activities, study chrome, results,
settings + health panel, API-key gate and help, install sheet, offline and
the deck-not-found page.
- Plural-aware counts everywhere (decks, folders, activities, runs, photos,
documents, pages, words, wrong attempts).
Server
- API routes and guards (generate, grade, health, http-guard, rate-limit,
ollama error mapping) answer in the request's language, so error cards and
the health panel never fall back to English mid-sentence.
Fixes
- A hydration mismatch when a non-default locale was stored silently dropped
the .dark class after hydration; render-time t() is now bound to the
hook's locale (UploadScreen.describeExtraction, ResultsScreen.answerFor,
DeckCard's folder fallback).
- Bumped the service worker cache to freezmo-v4 for this deploy.
Tests: i18n 27/27 (gate toggle, persistence, html lang, Czech plurals,
settings switch) and a rebuilt regression suite 72/72 (English default,
library, create, all 7 activity types, results, settings, install sheet,
offline, PWA, security, Czech smoke).
Rebuilds the look around the spec: an ice scene, one shared glass
recipe, icy accents and glass on every large surface. Visual only —
layout, behaviour, copy and functionality are untouched.
Background
- .ice-scene: fixed, z-index -1, pointer-events none. Navy base
(#070b16 to #0c1426) in dark, pale (#f4f9ff to #e6f1fb) in light,
four drifting glacier blobs (#38bdf8/#60a5fa/#818cf8, 30-60s
transform-only loops), five glossy ice orbs (40-220px radial
gradients with a highlight at 30% 25% and a blue shadow) placed so the
glass blurs them, and an SVG feTurbulence grain at 4-5%.
- prefers-reduced-motion stops the drift; phones get two blobs and two
orbs fewer.
Glass
- One shared recipe (.glass-panel, .card, .sidebar-surface,
.study-chrome, .tabbar, .glass, .gate-card): rgba(255,255,255,.06)
dark / .55 light, blur(24px) saturate(140%) (16px on phones), a bright
1px rim, an inset top highlight and a blue-tinted outer shadow.
- Nested glass (chips, inputs, secondary buttons) is more opaque and
never adds a second blur layer. @supports fallback for no
backdrop-filter. Radii: 24-28px cards/sheets, 14px inputs/buttons,
pills for chips. Cards hover brighter + cyan rim + 2px lift, 180ms.
Colour and type
- Accent is glacier cyan (#38bdf8) to ice blue (#0ea5e9); progress bars
and selected states use the gradient; the active sidebar item is a
frosted highlight with a cyan rim.
- Primary CTA: icy gradient — white to #bfe3ff with ink text in dark,
deep blue in light (biased so the label sits on the darker half and
keeps 5.6:1).
- Leftover slate/black greys replaced with navy-tinted frost tokens.
- Headings are semibold with tighter tracking.
Screens
- Dashboard: the sidebar is one tall inset rounded glass panel; deck
cards are glass.
- Gate: one centred glass card over the scene, orbs visible behind it.
- Sheets/modals: glass over the dimmed, lightly blurred backdrop.
- Study view: question card more opaque (.glass-solid); top bar and
pager are slim glass pills.
Perf: measured on a phone viewport with 4x CPU throttling. The animated
blobs' filter: blur() was the whole cost (150ms vs 33ms per frame), so
they are soft radial gradients with no filter now; idle 60fps, ~17ms
median while scrolling.
Tests updated for the new tokens: contrast 18/18 AA, deck chrome 15/15,
key gate 49/49, install sheet 64/64, deck fixes 15/15, retry 14/14,
zoom 6/6, final ux 12/12, security 8/8, pwa 16/16.
Next.js 15 app that turns photos, PDFs, DOCX/PPTX and text into a swipeable
feed of AI-generated activities (flashcards, multiple choice, true/false,
fill-in-the-blank, matching, ordering, short answer) using the user's own
Ollama models.
Highlights:
- All AI calls run in server route handlers; the browser never talks to Ollama.
- Bring-your-own-key mode (default): the key lives only in the browser and is
sent per-request; server, local-daemon and shared-key modes also supported.
- Client-side document extraction (pdf.js, mammoth, jszip) with scanned-PDF
page rendering for the vision model; notes stay in their original language.
- ChatGPT-style shell: collapsible sidebar / mobile drawer, neutral token-based
light + dark themes, folder organisation, PWA (manifest, SW, offline page).
- Strict JSON validation with zod + auto-repair, rate limiting, and request
guards (cross-origin, body-size, API-key sanitising).
- setup.sh bootstraps deps, .env.local and a production build.
Gitignore excludes .env*, the generated pdf.js worker and local scratch files.
